Flashback: Chena Dome Trail Enlightenment

[11/2/2005 via Gmail]

Not to rub it in or anything, but I attained enlightenment yesterday in a place called the Chena River State Recreation Area.  More specifically, it was the Chena Dome Trail, about 4 miles from the trailhead.  I could see white mountains in nearly every direction for what seemed like hundreds of miles.  Not a trace of human influence anywhere.  Bright sun and not even the slightest whiff of a cloud.  Everything; trees, schrubs, rocks, were covered with elaborate winking, sparkling ice crystals.  If the temperature hadn’t been 10 degrees and my outer layers of clothing freezing, I could have sat there forever.  With a giant smile on my face, I climbed the next ridge to keep warm and saw my first pair of moose.  A sow and her calf crossed the ridge and plunged down the other side.  No bears [I’d been singing Hank Williams to announce my presence- “My hair’s still curly and my eyes are still blue, why don’t you love me like you used to do”].  I may have seen some mountain lion tracks, I can’t be sure.

It was a glorious walk in the woods.   Precisely what I was looking for in Alaska.  Just thought I would share.
My best to all those warmer than myself,

-Scott
